Short answer

Read a BaZi chart by identifying the four pillars, locating the Day Master, observing the distribution of the Five Elements, and then interpreting relationships in context. Do not treat one symbol as a verdict about your personality or future.

Step 1 — Identify the four pillars

Start from the top of the chart and label the four pillars: year, month, day, and hour. Each pillar has a heavenly stem above or before an earthly branch. You are not interpreting yet; you are simply orienting yourself.

2Month

3Day

4Hour

Step 2 — Find the Day Master

The heavenly stem of the day pillar is the Day Master. Mark it first because many traditional readings use it as a reference point. For more detail, read What Is a Day Master?

Step 3 — Translate the stems and branches into phases

Each stem and branch has a Five Phase association. Mark each one as Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, or Water. A simple tally is not a full interpretation, but it helps you see where the chart is concentrated and where it is thin.

YearWhat larger context surrounds this chart?
MonthWhat season is the Day Master sitting in?
DayDay MasterWhat is the central reference point?
HourWhat finer context appears later in the chart?

Step 4 — Look at relationships, not isolated symbols

Ask what each phase is doing to the others. Is one phase abundant? Is it supporting, draining, restraining, or being restrained? The same symbol can behave differently depending on its neighbours.

Beginners often make the mistake of searching for one “lucky” element. A more useful first read is structural: where is the pressure, where is the support, and what trade-off does that create?

Step 5 — Connect the pattern to one real question

Choose one current decision, habit, or repeated conflict. Ask how the chart's central pressure might appear in that situation. This is where BaZi becomes self-reflection rather than trivia.

A 10-minute practice

  1. Generate your Free Elemental Profile.
  2. Label the four pillars and mark your Day Master.
  3. Tally the five phases.
  4. Write one sentence describing the chart's central pressure.
  5. Write one real situation where that pressure repeats.
  6. Choose one 10-minute action for the next day.

What to leave to a human reading

A beginner chart walk-through can help you understand structure. It should not be used to predict marriage timing, health, wealth, or another person's behaviour. A human reading can add context, source awareness, and interpretation around your selected focus.
