Many dismiss divination as superstition; I believe it holds some truth provided certain principles are observed. For instance, one should not consult the oracle for matters requiring no decision or obvious action—seek medical care for illness and strive hard to achieve goals—but when faced with equally difficult choices between two harms, two benefits, or similar levels of success probability, seeking guidance by what the heart desires is acceptable. The practice requires sincerity to calm the mind and amplify its feelings; avoiding multiple consultations on one matter prevents restlessness from interfering with intuition. Furthermore, just as sight, hearing, touch, smell, taste, and thought offer perception even without a seventh sense, such instincts naturally yield predictive effects.

For a reader today This passage presents historical principles for using divination in times of difficult decision-making, emphasizing mental calmness rather than guaranteeing specific outcomes.

In divination regarding acute illnesses, if the essential energy falls into a void period, recovery is expected on the day this void ends, regardless of other conflicting forces; however, for all other matters, falling into a void generally brings misfortune unless supported by external aid. Regarding hostile influences affecting an outcome, such harm can be neutralized if the primary factor receives assistance from significant time periods or moving elements.

For a reader today This passage offers readers specific divinatory rules for interpreting outcomes related to acute illness versus general affairs, along with principles for overcoming adverse influences through supportive factors.

title = 增刪卜易| author = 野鶴老人| section = 五行相生章第十一金生水,水生木,木生火,火生土,土生金。凡用神、元神宜於逢生,月建生、日建生,動爻生、動化回頭生。如卯月己卯日弟占兄已得重罪,叩問能救否。得復之震子孫酉金⚋ 兄弟戌土⚋妻財亥水⚋ 子孫申金⚋兄弟丑土ㄨ應 父母午火⚊兄弟辰土⚋ 兄弟辰土⚋官鬼寅木⚋ 官鬼寅木⚋妻財子水⚊世 妻財子水⚊兄弟爻爲用神,丑土兄動日月克之,明現大罪難脫,幸得兄爻丑土化午火父母回頭相生,斷曰:速速行之。父母化兄爻相生爲吉,後蒙恩免死。

This rule states that favorable deities thrive when they encounter generative support from the lunar month, solar day, moving lines, or transformations back to themselves. For example, in a case where a person faces severe charges, an auspicious outcome is predicted if the brother line transforms into the parent line with mutual generation, leading to mercy and survival.

For a reader today This text describes traditional Chinese divination methods involving metaphysical concepts like five elements and symbolic lines that are not applicable to modern life or current events. It offers a historical perspective on ancient belief systems rather than providing guidance for contemporary decisions.

This text outlines rules for interpreting hexagrams in divination, stating that a line entering a grave must be resolved by its冲破 day to succeed, while noting that prosperous divine signs generally indicate good fortune unless the world line is outside the situation and harmed by it. It further specifies guidelines such as using wealth lines when predicting money, retaining travel or travelers' lines within the trine, distinguishing internal and external hexagrams for house disputes, and explaining how trines formed internally, externally, or across both should be read relative to self and others, illustrated here with a specific case where an earth village conflicts with a metal village but resolves due to weak metal and changing hexagrams suggesting separation.

For a reader today This passage provides historical principles used in traditional Chinese fortune-telling to analyze relationships between opposing forces, while offering no practical predictions for modern life or personal decision-making.

This text presents technical rules for interpreting divination outcomes based on the interactions between specific symbols, such as the timing of events relative to seasonal months and days, the strength of key elements, and whether symbols transform into advancing or receding states. It instructs that predictions for distant matters are fixed by year and month, while those for immediate concerns correspond to the day and hour, and it advises consulting additional divinations if the initial卦 (trigram) appears unclear.

For a reader today This passage offers historical insights into how classical Chinese fortune-telling was systematized around symbolic interactions and timing rules for distant versus near events. It provides a scholarly view of traditional divination logic rather than serving as a source of modern predictive or practical advice.

How Eastern Lens uses this text

The passages above are quoted as cultural and philosophical sources. Where a work states a rule of divination, Eastern Lens presents it as a rule of a historical tradition, and separates it from any claim about a reader's life. The modern reading is Eastern Lens interpretation (evidence level C4), not a claim by the original author.
